No wonder you found something that isn't on this list because many people made their own 3D engines in Flash (ever since AS2, and even AS1 I guess). I've never heard about it and will take a look.

You are right with the FIVe3D update. This article is a bit out of date in some places. The teams working on each 3D engines have made some huge progress. I'll write an update of this article soon.

Thanks for this comment lauren !

One more thing: I just downloaded the latest FIVe3D v2.1.1 and it can handle bitmaps and video now - hot! First experiments are impressive, very easy to get into (it ships with an example). I think I'll pick this one for my first forays into 3D in AS3.

Hi,
This is just the article I was looking for - thankyou!
I had been searching around seeing who offered what and how to use it. The only thing I found that isn't on your list is Elemental 4D:
http://www.actionscript.org/resources/articles/819/1/Elemental-4D---Practical-3D-for-Flash-Media/Page1.html
Which doesn't seem to have its own website but looks pretty well organised nevertheless (and no, I have nothing to do with it!). Your thoughts?

Cool!

Also, you mentioned that the use of FIVe3D would fix the warped text effect - that is true, although if you attempted to render that amount of text in 3D vectors your framerate would drop considerably.

The reason for that distortion is that the FlashPlayer can only perform skew transformations on bitmaps; in order to get any kind of 3D stretch we need to resort to using this hack.

Things are however improved with FlashPlayer version 10 - we now have the ability to do proper 3D perspective stretching on bitmaps, and so this horrible distortion should be a thing of the past.

cheers!

Just a quick correction - although Papervision integrated a couple of elements of Away3D, to say it has "merged with Great White" is a little misleading.

Useful summary though - thanks!
